What people have started, people can end. While this notion voiced by CMI’s founder, President Martti Ahtisaari, remains true, we are painfully aware that in todays’ volatile world, finding sustainable solutions to conflict is more difficult than ever.
There are now more countries with war and other forms of violent conflicts than in the last 30 years. Also, more people are being killed in violent conflict, a ten-fold increase since 2005. The number of complex intra-state conflicts is rising at an alarming rate. In 2019, the number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 79.5 million. Human suffering caused by war and conflict is immense, and conflict and insecurity are severe threats to sustainable development.
