What’s required for sustainable peace? CMI experts share lessons from peace processes

‘Prescriptions for Peace’ is a series of short videos that explores conflicts and disagreements through interviews with CMI’s experts.

As conflicts multiply and the number of actors involved in peacemaking continues to grow, the need for clear understanding about how sustainable peace is built has become increasingly important.

A new CMI video series called Prescriptions for Peace brings practical insights from peacemaking to the wider public. The series sees CMI experts explain how dialogue, trust-building and compromise help societies address tensions and conflicts constructively.

With global attention focusing on conflicts after they erupt, CMI wants to highlight the conditions that make peace possible.

Lessons from peace processes

The new series, Prescriptions for Peace, is produced by CMI in collaboration with Nordic pharmaceutical company Orion Corporation, with CMI retaining full editorial responsibility for the content.

“Prescriptions for Peace explores key elements of sustainable peace, from trust and dialogue to inclusion and shared responsibility” – Hanna Klinge, CMI Deputy CEO

In nine short videos, CMI’s experts reflect on key conditions that enable sustainable peace, including trust, inclusion, dialogue and shared ownership.

Drawing on CMI’s decades of experience in international peace processes, the experts featured in the series share reflections based on their practical experience in conflict prevention and resolution across different regions of the world.

“Sustainable peace is about much more than just ending violence and getting to a deal,” said Hanna Klinge, Deputy CEO of CMI. “In mediation processes, we see how trust and dialogue gradually create the foundation for more stable societies. Through the Prescriptions for Peace series, we want to share some of these lessons from peace processes with a wider audience.”

For CMI, Martti Ahtisaari’s sentiment from his Nobel Peace Prize lecture, “Peace is a question of will”, captures a central lesson from decades of peacemaking: sustainable peace does not emerge automatically from favourable circumstances or political agreements but requires the willingness of people and societies to choose dialogue, compromise and cooperation.

The series also highlights how many of the dynamics that shape international conflicts, such as trust, dialogue, inclusion and compromise, also influence how tensions are managed within societies and communities.

“We share CMI’s ambition of a more stable, just and healthy future for all and see the core tenets of peacebuilding as an important part of our work and the broader societal discussion around health. We are excited to begin this collaboration and to explore new ways to bring peacebuilding into public discussion,” said Liisa Hurme, President and CEO of Orion Corporation.
