CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation is convening a unique gathering of the world’s foremost experts to discuss the future of peacemaking. The event held in honour of the 25 years of CMI will feature, among others, HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and former President of Ireland Mary Robinson as speakers. The evening will begin with opening reflections by Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland. The event will be streamed live starting at 18:00 (EET) on 3 December 2025.
Looking back to the beginning of the 21st century, the landscape of peacemaking looks very different in 2025, and the current era of disorder presents new challenges. While new actors and negotiation methods bring fresh opportunities, the demand for deep insight and seasoned experience remains strong. As the world continues to change, peacemaking must also evolve and, by building on its foundations, find new ways to respond to today’s complex realities.
What principles and peacemaking practices should preserve? And what must we change or rethink completely? These are the questions we will explore together in dialogue with some of the world’s leading experts in Helsinki on 3 December 2025.
The evening will begin with opening reflections by Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland, followed by a high-level exchange on the future of peace mediation in a fragmented global order.
The high-level exchange will bring together HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who also serves as a member of The Elders, a group founded by Nelson Mandela. They will be joined by Afghan human rights activist and the country’s first female deputy speaker of parliament, Fawzia Koofi, as well as the African Union’s Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security and former Foreign Minister of Tanzania, Liberata Mulamula.
The event is by invitation only but will be streamed live starting at 18:00 (EET) on 3 December 2025. A recording will also be available afterwards. Links will be published on CMI’s channels closer to the event.
Founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari, CMI is marking its 25 years this year. Throughout 2025, the organisation has hosted a series of events around the world honouring its founder’s legacy, bringing together political leaders, practitioners, and representatives from the private sector and civil society to discuss peace and the future of peacemaking. The year culminates in December, when the Finlandia Hall fills with discussions on peace and the future of peacemaking.
