On Monday 30 June in Jakarta, CMI will host a high-level seminar exploring Southeast Asia’s strong tradition and experience in regional peacemaking, highlighting valuable lessons that can inspire efforts in other parts of the world. The keynote address will be delivered by Jusuf Kalla, former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.
Organised by CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, the Foreign Policy Community Indonesia (FPCI), and the Embassy of Finland in Indonesia, the event is part of a global seminar series aimed at reflecting on Ahtisaari’s contributions to peace and discussing the future of peacemaking in different local, regional and global contexts.
The event starts at 13:30 local time (9:30 Finnish time) and can be watched live or later on demand. Click the link to watch live.
The Seminar in Jakarta will open with remarks from Dr. Janne Taalas, CEO of CMI, and Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, Founder and Chairman of Foreign Policy Community Indonesia. A keynote address titled “Future of Peace Mediation in Southeast Asia” will be delivered by H.E. Jusuf Kalla, former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia. The event will close with remarks from H.E. Pekka Kaihilahti, Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia.
The Seminar will include two panel discussions. The first will focus on the evolving role of regional actors and cross-regional cooperation in conflict resolution, exploring how these partnerships can offer context-specific and sustainable solutions in a shifting global landscape. The second panel will highlight the role of youth in peace and security in Southeast Asia. With young people making up around a third of ASEAN’s population, the discussion will address how to move beyond symbolic participation and meaningfully involve youth in peace processes; a clause reinforced by President Ahtisaari and supported by frameworks like the UN Security Council Resolution 2250.
Rooted in the legacy of CMI’s late founder President Martti Ahtisaari (1937–2023), Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of Finland, the Legacy Seminars bring together political leaders, practitioners, and representatives of the private sector and civil society, to create discussions about peace and the future of peacemaking. Previous seminars have been held in Ankara, Brussels, Pretoria, New York, Dar es Salaam, and Geneva. Now, conversations on peace continue in Jakarta.
