Yemen

Yemen’s current political landscape is characterized by deep levels of fragmentation and a paradox impasse. On the one hand, international and regional mediation efforts to solve the conflict have intensified and stabilized the “no war, no peace” situation and created momentum and hope for a resolution of the Yemeni conflict. At the same time, the mediation efforts have not succeeded in resuming an inclusive peace process, as civic voices within the political sphere are marginalized and relevant political entities struggle to fulfil their mandate.

Our Work

In this context, CMI facilitates informal dialogue among relevant stakeholders from political parties, movements and entities, tribes and civil society on critical national issues. This enables entities and actors from across the political spectrum to build strong relationships of trust and to negotiate jointly Yemen’s political future in a peaceful, open and safe manner. At the moment, CMI supports Yemen’s political leadership to strengthen their cohesion and agency in national processes and the broader peace negotiations. In addition, CMI’s efforts contribute to advancing women’s meaningful participation in inclusive decision-making and the broader peace process, ensuring that women’s views and needs are given weight in all negotiations to steer the country’s future in a better direction.

Key results

CMI has been able to advance women’s meaningful participation in the peace process and broader decision-making processes in Yemen by strengthening their skills in advocacy and policy influencing; connecting them directly with the UN Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen; supporting existing mechanisms for inclusion through re-activating the connectivity of women’s departments and by facilitatinge a joint vision building process on political agency for men and women in Yemen. In addition, CMI is contributing to strengthening the civilian political space by enhancing relations of trust and direct communication between political stakeholders and entities on the national level; supporting the institutional capacities of national entities and channeling Yemeni insights and recommendations to the UN Office of the Special Envoy for Yemen.
