CMI’s core objective is to prevent and resolve political conflict. Drawing on over two decades of global engagement, the key outcomes of our efforts include:
Offering societies an opportunity for more sustainable development
Peace is a cornerstone of sustainable development. It reduces violence and enables societal progress. CMI has contributed to dozens of peace processes worldwide, helping societies move toward sustainable development while advancing regional agendas on cooperation, diplomacy, and security. Our work directly advances the global Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, particularly SDGs 5 (Gender Equality) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), as well as the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agendas.
Assisting the international community in responding to evolving conflicts
The international community needs agile, informal peace mediators to address new types of conflict. CMI has consistently complemented the efforts of official entities, providing swift, effective mediation support to prevent and resolve conflicts. Our contributions have strengthened key international and regional peace structures, including the EU, African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the OSCE, and the UN.
Connecting peacemaking efforts at all levels
With over two decades of trusted engagement, CMI has built bridges between peacemaking efforts at the local, national, regional, and international levels. As an informal peacemaker, we have facilitated access and channels of communication also among actors that official diplomacy often cannot engage with, strengthening overall peace efforts.
Promoting inclusive participation in peace processes
Sustainable peace requires the involvement of those most affected by conflict. CMI has acted as a trusted partner for hundreds of groups and factions to engage in peaceful dialogue, also bringing together non-likeminded actors. We have also utilized digital technologies to enhance foresight and participation in peacemaking.
Advancing women’s political agency and gender-inclusive mediation
Women’s inclusion in peace processes is essential for both equality and quality in conflict resolution. CMI has helped to increase women’s participation in political decision-making and fostered gender-inclusive mediation practices within the global peacemaking community. Through safe spaces for women from conflict regions and training for high-level mediators, we have advanced women’s roles in shaping lasting peace.
Cultivating Finnish expertise in peace mediation
Peace mediation is a core element of Finland’s development, foreign, and security policies. In addition to promoting a more stable and secure world, it allows Finland to influence key issues, gather information, and build networks. CMI supports this goal by carrying out peace mediation in practice, drawing on its Finnish roots and the legacy of President Martti Ahtisaari. CMI also serves as a central hub of expertise in peace mediation, enabling young professionals to grow and master the craft of peace.
