Regional
Increasing geopolitical competition is threatening to escalate long-standing intra-state conflicts and inter-state disputes into violent confrontations in Asia. Multilateral frameworks intended for advancing regional cooperation and dialogue to address these disputes are rising in importance, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Yet, the newer trends affecting peace and security and the increasingly complex nature of conflicts are posing substantial challenges to these efforts.
Our work
With a focus on high-level summits and formal structures, the apparent scarcity of discreet dialogue complementing formal efforts and the region’s rich history in peacemaking outside of formal multi-structures provides a space for CMI to meaningfully contribute to conflict resolution in Asia.
Since 2019, CMI has worked with regional actors and stakeholders to exchange insights and lessons on best practices for conflict resolution as well as for providing informal support to regional actors in the Southeast Asia. In Northeast Asia, CMI engages in efforts together with stakeholders and regional actors to find peaceful solutions to questions underlying the tensions in the region. The regional efforts are supported by staying connected with the expert community and policy discussions on a range of issues, including on themes such as Youth and Digital Peacemaking, and cooperation with key organizations and stakeholders. Dialogue with Chinese stakeholders has contributed to increased understanding of trends, shared challenges and opportunities related to regional and global conflict resolution efforts.
