CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation is hosting a new kind of election debate for Finnish and international audiences, putting peace at the centre of the presidential election. Public debate on peace is important at a time of war in Europe and the Middle East and the highest number of violent conflicts worldwide since the Second World War.
The Peace Election Debate will take place in the Media Piazza of Sanoma House in Helsinki on 13 November from 16:30 to 18:00 EET. Participants in the debate will be Mika Aaltola, Li Andersson, Pekka Haavisto, Jussi Halla-aho, Olli Rehn and Alexander Stubb. The debate is being organised in cooperation with Politico and the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat.
The debate will be open to the public and is a continuation of the parliamentary election debate held in February. CMI will provide a platform for the candidates to discuss the means and obstacles to achieving peace and the search for common solutions.
In addition to Ukraine and other conflicts, the forum will discuss EU enlargement and the new security architecture for Europe, as well as the roles of Finland and the EU in promoting peace.
The debate will have Finnish and English parts. The first part will be moderated by Hanna Vesala, Ilta-Sanomat’s social affairs editor, and the debate will be streamed live on ISTV.
The second part will be moderated by Sarah Wheaton, Politico Europe’s Chief Policy Correspondent. The English-language debate can be followed live on the Politico website.
If you would like to attend, you are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the debate.
