CMI to launch Asia Programme in 2019

Published on Thursday, 29th of November 2018

CMI will launch an Asia Programme in 2019. The new programme reflects the growing interest in CMI’s work.

CMI has been following the development of the region for a long time, for example, through the work of President Martti Ahtisaari. With the growth in Asia’s global importance, time is now ripe for a new geographic program. CMI aims to build peace in Myanmar, for instance.

“The role of Asia in world politics will grow. For CMI, the new programme is thus an investment for the future. We have good networks in the area through the appreciation of President Ahtisaari”, says CMI’s Programme Director Ville Brummer.

The unstable world situation is reflected in the growing interest in CMI’s work. CMI receives more requests for peace mediation than it is capable of responding. Last year CMI received almost 50 major requests for launching a new cooperation or expanding an existing one. Only about 20 % of the requests can be scrutinised more closely.
